State Title Picks

December 3, 2009 by jobreza

Division I

Glenville (13-1) vs Hilliard Davidson (12-1)

Glenville enters the championship game riding a 13-game winning streak. Hilliard Davidson has won six straight games since a 10-7 loss to Dublin Coffman. Hilliard Davidson beat Cincinnati Elder, 24-20, in the state semifinals. The Wildcats won the Division I state championship in 2006 defeating Mentor, 36-35, in double overtime. Glenville standouts include junior quarterback Cardale Jones, Christian Bryant, Toney Foster, Jayrone Elliott and senior linebacker Latwan Anderson. The Tarblooders are fast, talented and athletic. Glenville is the first Cleveland Municipal School District team to play in a state  football title game. This is the “Year of the Tarblooders” and coach Ted Ginn Sr.

Pick:  Glenville

Division II

Maple Heights (12-2) vs Winton Woods (12-2)

Coach Todd Filtz and the Maple Heights Mustangs are on a stampede through the playoffs. Led by junior quarterback Shaq Washington, senior running back Devonte Ransom, senior linebacker Aaron Russell and senior lineman Dominic Flewellyn, the Mustangs have beat the odds to reach the state title game. They definitely will be the underdog against Winton Woods. The Warriors have  several Associated Press all-state selections, including co-offensive player of  the year senior quarterback Dominique Brown (6-2, 203). They have scored 196 points in four playoff games, including 69 against Columbus Marion-Franklin in the state semis. Winton Woods two losses were to Cincinnati Moeller and Cincinnati Anderson. Both teams have quickness and talent. It also is the first state football championship game appearance for each team. It’s hard to pick against the Mustangs considering the way they’re performing in the playoffs but the Warriors  are on the warpath too.

Pick:  Winton Woods

Division III

Youngstown Cardinal Mooney (14-0) vs Columbus St. Francis DeSales (11-3)

Youngstown Cardinal Mooney may be the best team in the state in any division. If the Cardinals don’t fly away with a state title on Friday at Paul Brown Stadium in Massillon there should be an investigation.

Pick:  Cardinal Mooney

Division IV

Chagrin Falls (14-0) vs. Kettering Archbishop Alter (14-0)

Kettering Alter is the defending Division IV state champ. The Knights are riding a 29-game winning streak on the field (27 for the record after forfeiting their  first two games last season). This team is talented and experienced. Among the standouts are senior strong safety  Cody Byers (AP Division IV defensive players of year honor).  Coach Mark Iammarino’s Tigers are led by seniors Chris Trinetti (quarterback- first team AP All-Ohio), Chris Gorman (running back -first team AP All-Ohio) and linebacker Bobby Winkleman who was among the  AP Division IV defensive players of the year. The Tigers are having the best season in school history and are in the title game for the first time. They face an uphill battle on Saturday at Fawcett Stadium in Canton. My heart is with the Tigers but logic is with the Knights.

Pick: Kettering Archbishop Alter

Division V

Youngstown Ursuline (10-3) vs. Coldwater (13-1)

The Fighting Irish play a tougher schedule which is a big plus when it comes to crunch time in the state championship game.   Ursuline has won two state titles and the Coldwater Cavaliers also have two in 2005 and 2007. Cavaliers only loss this season was 27-20 to defending Division VI state champ Delphos St. John’s.

Pick: Ursuline

Division VI

Norwalk St. Paul (14-0) vs Delphos St. John’s (14-0)

A classic battle of unbeaten teams. Delphos St. John’s is the defending Division VI state champ and has won five state titles. The Norwalk St. Paul Flyers are seeking their first state championship. They were runner-ups in 1997, 1999, 2004. Going with the underdog in this one.

Pick:  Norwalk St. Paul

Best Wishes To State Finalists

November 30, 2009 by jobreza

Congrats and good luck to the Glenville Tarblooders (Division I), Maple Heights Mustangs (Division II), Chagrin Falls Tigers (Division IV) and Norwalk St. Paul Flyers (Division VI) in their quest to win 2009  state football titles in their respective divisions.

Playoff Picks – State Semifinals

November 25, 2009 by jobreza

Division I

Glenville (12-1) vs. Massillon (10-3)

This is the Glenville Tarblooders (fifth seed) second trip to the state semifinals in school history. They lost to Canton McKinley, 20-17,  in 2004. After beating St. Ignatius, 30-13, in the regional semis, the Tarblooders escaped with a 28-27 win over Solon  in the regional finals last week. The Massillon Tigers defeated Twinsburg and Canton McKinley by identical 10-7 scores the last two weeks. Glenville is the most talented team left in Division I. Among the standouts are Cardale Jones, Christian Bryant and Latwan Anderson. If  coach Ted Ginn Sr. and the Tarblooders bring their “A” game, they will be headed to the state championship contest.

Pick:  Glenville

Division II

Lake Catholic (12-1) vs Maple Heights (11-2)

The Lake Catholic Cougars (first seed) were Division III state champs in 1991, 1992 and 2001. Cougars are led by senior quarterback Jarrod Ronyak and senior wide receiver Zach Cvelbar. Connor Briggs is among the team’s defensive standouts. The Maple Heights Mustangs  (sixth seed) are making their first appearance in the state semifinals. Standout players include quarterback Shaq Washington, running back DeVonte Ransom and defensive tackle Dominic Flewellyn. The Mustangs have been impressive in their run through Division II, Region 6. Cougars are banged up which is not good. Not having Richie Sanders available against Maple Heights will hurt the Cougars. The Mustang stampede has talent and speed which may be too much for Lake Catholic to handle.

Pick:  Maple Heights

Division IV

Chagrin Falls (13-0) vs Ottawa-Glandorf (11-2)

The unbeaten Chagrin Falls Tigers (first seed) are having the best football season in school history. Tigers are led by senior quarterback Chris Trinetti, senior running back Chris Gorman and junior linebacker Bobby Winkelman. Putting points on the board is not a problem for the Tigers. Coach Mark Iammarino’s club has scored 128 points in three playoff games. There is no reason why the Tigers shouldn’t advance to the state title game. This is a tight knit group of players on a mission.

Pick:  Chagrin Falls

Breeze’s Best — playoff edition

Jerrod Ronyak — Lake Catholic senior quarterback completed 10 of 13 passes for 291 yards and three touchdowns to spark the Cougars to a 34-16 victory over Ravenna in the Division II, Region 5 regional quaterfinals.

Tim Wetzel — Mayfield senior linebacker/running back rushed for 141 yards and two touchdowns as the Wildcats pounded Parma, 38-7, in the Division I, Region I regional quarterfinals. Wetzel surpassed the 1,000-yard mark rushing for the season with a 36-yard run in the first half.

Chris Trinetti — Chagrin Falls senior quarterback made his father Gary proud running for two touchdowns and throwing three TD passes as the unbeaten Tigers trounced Campbell Memorial 41-13 in a Division IV regional quarterfinal clash.

Rodnell Pierce — Glenville’s 5-11, 185-pound senior wide reciever/linebacker was a standout on defense for the Tarblooders in their 41-16 Division I, Region I regional quarterfinal victory over North Royalton. Pierce recovered a fumble returning it 30 yards for a touchdown and intercepted a pass for a 32-yard touchdown.

Ronnie Willoughby — Avon Lake wide reciever caught five passes for 176 yards, including four for touchdowns, as the Shormen went to the air to defeat host  Maumee, 56-35, in a Division II, Region 6 regional quarterfinal game.
